Descriptions of all categories and other details are provided.
Nomination Deadline - June 15, 2010
NATIONAL HALL OF FAME
Established in 2009, the National Hall of Fame is dedicated to men and women who have overcome physical challenges to become elite athletes and role models.
Athletes with Disabilities National Hall of Fame nominees MUST meet the following criteria:
1. Competed as an athlete with a disability for a minimum of ten-years within the United States
- Competed at the local, regional, state or national level as an athlete with a disability
- Demonstrated ongoing involvement in the sport
- Demonstrated achievement and accomplishment in the sport
- Demonstrated good sportsmanship
- Enhanced the sport for individuals, his/her team or overall
2. Served as a positive role model for the community
- Participated in the following:
- community awareness programs and/or events
- civic and/or volunteer organizations
- community service organizations
- Impacted the community at large
- Demonstrated solid character and integrity
Note:
- Award may be granted posthumously
- An individual can only be honored once in this category
MICHIGAN HALL OF FAME
Established in 1999, the Michigan Hall of Fame is dedicated to men and women who have overcome physical challenges to become elite athletes and role models. Michigan Hall of Fame alumni include Paralympian, world record holders and Tour de France participants.
Athletes with Disabilities Michigan Hall of Fame nominees MUST meet the following criteria:
1. Resided in Michigan for a minimum of five-years
2. Competed as an athlete with a disability for a minimum of ten-years, including five as a Michigan resident
- Competed at the local, regional, state or national level as an athlete with a disability
- Demonstrated ongoing involvement in the sport
- Demonstrated achievement and accomplishment in the sport
- Demonstrated good sportsmanship
- Enhanced the sport for individuals, his/her team or overall
3. Served as a positive role model for the community
- Participated in the following:
- community awareness programs and/or events
- civic and/or volunteer organizations
- community service organizations
- Impacted the community at large
- Demonstrated solid character and integrity
Note:
- Award may be granted posthumously
- An individual can only be honored once in this category
TONY FILIPPIS, SR. CORPORATE LEADERSHIP AWARD
The Tony Filippis, Sr. Corporate Leadership Award was established to recognize an outstanding leader in business that has made significant contributions to their community by demonstrating leadership and commitment to the advancement of persons with disabilities. This award is named in honor of the founder of Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame, Tony Filippis, Sr.
Tony Filippis, Sr. is a nationally-known and beloved icon in the movement to improve the lives of persons with disabilities. He experienced first-hand the frustration and heartache frequently confronted by persons with disabilities when he lost both of his legs below the knee in a train accident at the age of 13. Tony dedicated his personal and professional life to assisting persons with disabilities. The disappointments and discrimination he faced fueled his passion for making a difference in the lives of others.
Tony Filippis, Sr. Corporate Leadership Award nominees MUST meet the following criteria:
1. Company must show evidence of its engagements in and financial support of programs that promote the advancement of persons with disabilities
2. Company must support community-based programs designed to improve the lives of persons with disabilities
- Financial support
- Offering community groups access to corporate resources people, equipment, and facilities
3. Encouraging employee volunteerism in the community
- Specifically with organizations who work with persons with disabilities
RICK KNAS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The Rick Knas Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to the success of others. The award is named in honor of the Hall of Fame's first Chairperson, Rick Knas, who coordinated all of the volunteers and the selection process for the inaugural Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame awards ceremony, held in October 1999. Due in large part to his contributions, the Hall of Fame received tremendous support and recognition that first year, enabling it to develop into a strong and credible organization.
Rick Knas Lifetime Achievement Award nominees MUST meet the following criteria:
1. Positively impacted the community that serves athletes with disabilities for a minimum of ten-years
2. Demonstrated significant contributions to the disabled athletic community
Note:
- Honoree need not be disabled or an athlete
- Award may be granted posthumously
- An individual can only be honored once in this category
PAT MCDONALD FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD
The Pat McDonald Female Athlete of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding female athlete for her athletic achievement from the past year (January December). The award is named in honor of founding member Pat McDonald, who was a strong advocate for people with disabilities, especially MS. Pat was a devoted friend and mentor to many.
Female Athlete of Year Award nominees MUST meet the following criteria:
- Declare the United States as her primary residence
- Competed as an athlete with a disability in the last year
- Be female
Note:
- Award may be granted posthumously for achievements made in the last year; secondary consideration will be given to additional athletic successes throughout her career
- An individual may be honored more than once in this category
ROGER MCCARVILLE MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD
The Roger McCarville Male Athlete of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding male athlete for his athletic achievement from the past year (January December). The award is named in honor of founding member Roger McCarville, a true advocate for people with disabilities. He encouraged many people to speak up for others who couldn't speak up for themselves, and encouraged everyone to get up, get out and get involved. Roger McCarville undoubtedly led by example.
Male Athlete of Year Award nominees MUST meet the following criteria:
1. Declare the United States as his primary residence
2. Competed as an athlete with a disability in the last year
3. Be male
Note:
- Award may be granted posthumously for achievements made in the last year; secondary consideration will be given to additional athletic successes throughout his career
- An individual may be honored more than once in this category
MARK "DOC" ANDREWS RISING STAR AWARD
The Mark "Doc" Andrews Rising Star Award recognizes a young person who has demonstrated extraordinary effort, achievement and commitment as an athlete with a disability. This award is named in honor of Mark "Doc" Andrews, a caring and devoted friend of the Hall of Fame who served as the event's first and longtime Master of Ceremonies.
Mark "Doc" Andrews Rising Star Award nominees MUST meet the following criteria
1. Be under the age of 26 at the time of nomination
2. Competed as an athlete with a disability
- Competed at the local, regional, state or national level as an athlete with a disability
- Demonstrated ongoing involvement in the sport
- Demonstrated achievement and accomplishment in the sport
- Demonstrated good sportsmanship
- Enhanced the sport for individuals, his/her team or overall
3. Served as a positive role model for the community
- Participated in the following:
- community awareness programs and/or events
- civic and/or volunteer organizations
- community service organizations
- Impacted the community at large
- Demonstrated solid character and integrity

Submit the Online Nomination Form and all supporting materials.
- When submitted, the official nomination form must be accompanied by a current photo of the nominee, a detailed summary of their athletic and community involvement, and a minimum of two letters of recommendation to be deemed complete. Submitted materials will not be returned.
